Last week the YRHS Raiders put together an impressive performance in Moose Jaw, finishing in fifth place out of 16 teams.
According to head coach Brendon Weir, the team failed to carry any sort of momentum from that tournament into their most recent one this past weekend in Estevan where the Raiders struggled, winning just two of 12 sets. “Overall the weekend was well below of what we are capable of, and we did not play to our potential,” said YRHS Raider head coach Brendon Weir. “The way I would describe this tournament is that it is a write off. We didn’t have a full roster and had players playing in different positions, but fundamental volleyball errors is what cost us most sets this weekend.”
The Raiders opened the tournament up with a straight sets loss to Oxbow 21-25, 18-25, before falling in straight sets to Weyburn 22-25, 15-25, with the latter set being particularly tough for coach Weir to stomach. “In the second set, we were trailing 15-14 before mental errors cost us nine straight points,” mentioned Weir.
Their final Friday match saw the Raiders take on the Melville Cobras and for the third straight game the Raiders were dispatched in straight sets, this time falling 12-25 and 20-25 to finish Friday action with a record of 0-6.
Saturday started off much better for the Raiders as the edged the host Estevan Elecs 25-23 in the first set. However the second set saw the team come out flat resulting in a one-sided 7-25 set two loss.
A straight sets defeat to Carnduff (22-25, 16-25) in which Weir started his bench gave the Raiders a 1-9 record through their first 10 sets before the finished up splitting the final game of the tournament with the Sacred Heart Saints, taking the first set 25-23 before dropping the second set 21-25 to finish out of the playoff picture.
