The YRHS Mixed Team of Graham Campbell, Camille Sharp, Nathan Bewcyk and Brooke Switzer, along with Coach Lana Stanek-Sebastian, attended the 2014 Ramada Hotels Juvenile Provincial Championship that was held March 13 to 16 in Carlyle.
The team began play on Thursday, March 13 with their first game against Team Lamontagne from Lumsden.
Team Campbell played extremely well in their first game as they had draw weight and the ice figured out early which led them to a 6 - 3 win.
The win set them up well for the remaining round robin games.
Team Campbell played again on Friday morning against Team Gustafson from Debden.
This game was a bit more challenging as Gustafson opened by taking three points.
This did not deter Campbell who continued to chip away at the early Gustofson lead and after the sixth end Campbell had stolen two consecutive ends putting them in the lead at 5-4.
Unfortunately they were not able to keep their momentum and gave up five points in the seventh end resulting in a final score of 9-5 in favour of the Debden club.
Despite the loss, Team Campbell made it into the playoff round.
In their first Page Playoff game Campbell gave once again gave up three points after the first end, this time to Regina Callie's Team Williamson.
Campbell then blanked the second end to retain hammer and took one point in the third end making the score 3-1.
Stealing a point in the fourth end put the score at 3-2.
In the fifth end Campbell gave up four points and a steal of one in the sixth putting the score at 8-2.
Campbell fought back, however, to take another three points in the seventh end.
With a score 8-5 Campbell needed to steal three points in order to force an extra end.
They did manage to get three rocks counting during the eighth end, but the Williamson team was able to eliminate these stones and win the game thereby eliminating Team Campbell from the playoffs.
The YRHS Mixed team played very well throughout the weekend and certainly gained some good experience playing some very competitive teams.
An added bonus to the weekend was the opportunity to work with High Performance Coach Travis Brown from CurlSask who offered some valuable tips to help improve their game.
Brown has coached teams including Amber Holland, Steve Laycock and Brooklyn Lemon at both Provincial and World level events.
Overall this was a very successful season for the YRHS Mixed team as they won the gold medal at Districts and also played in the SHSAA Provincial Curling Championship where they fell just short of winning the bronze medal.
The YRHS is very proud of all of our curling teams this season and is already looking forward to next season!
