The Yorkton Regional High School curling club teamed up with the Yorkton Curling Club to host a high school curling tournament this past weekend at the Gallagher Centre.

Eight teams from five different schools took part in a highly competitive curling tournament which ended with a final that needed a shootout to decide the champion.

In the end it was the YRHS mixed 1 rink that secured victory thanks to a shootout shot by skip Graham Campbell. Campbell put just enough weight into his shootout throw, allowing his rock to glide into the 12-foot circle and give his YRHS mixed 1 rink a hard fought 8-7 (4-4 after six) shootout victory over a very talented Esterhazy Girls rink.

Even though one of the three YRHS teams competing won the tournament, YRHS mixed 2 and YRHS girls also took part, YRHS curling coach Lana Stanek-Sebastian mentioned that the main purpose of the tournament was to simply give the athletes a chance to gain valuable experience before districts begin. "It's great game experience for them because they are going into district play downs in February and we wanted to get them some game experience against some other student teams before that time," mentioned a smiling Stanek-Sebastian about all three YRHS teams. "Hopefully that has given them a chance to improve their skills against other students and comparable players."
