The YRHS Lady Raiders senior girls’ basketball team made their way to Estevan this past weekend to take part in a tournament and came back to Yorkton with a 1-2 record.

The girls opened the tournament up with an 80-41 defeat at the hands of Moose Jaw Peacock, who, according to Lady Raider head coach Jessica Schmidt, is one of the top 4A teams in the province. “We started off slow against one of, if not the top 4A team in the province,” offered Schmidt, adding that while the game ended in blowout fashion not everything was negative. “We ended up winning the 3rd quarter which is a great accomplishment for our girls.

Olivia Tomcala put together arguably her best performance of the season against Peacock, picking up a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

Game Two saw the Lady Raiders take on their old rivals, the Weyburn Eagles, in a key game ahead of this coming weekend’s conference playoffs.

Tomcala once again had a strong game leading the Lady Raiders offensively with 12 points while pulling down seven rebounds, however her effort was not enough as the Lady Raiders fell to Weyburn 56-39. “This was a big game for us going into conferences this next weekend where there is a good chance we will see Weyburn,” mentioned the Lady Raider head coach. “Unfortunately we were unable to play 40 minutes of consistent basketball and Weyburn capitalized on that.”

Hunter Frankfurt finished two points and one rebound shy of a double-double, finishing with eight points and nine rebounds against Weyburn.

The final game of the tournament pitted the Lady Raiders against Moose Jaw Central.

Leah Fleger and Tomcala rose to the occasion against Central as both girls picked up double-doubles, Fleger with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Tomcala scored 11 points and registered 10 rebounds in the hard fought 54-51 overtime win.

Frankfurt just missed the double-double once again, ending the game with eight points and a team high 13 rebounds while Kaitlin Mak hit double digits in points scoring 10.
