The YRHS Raider archery team put a successful end to their 2016 season this past weekend, travelling to Weyburn for the 2016 Provincials – 鶹ýAV Division and returning home with several medals.

Team-wise, the Raiders took top honours with an overall score of 3017 to give them their fourth team top finish in five tournaments this season. “We had a really good showing at provincials, and because of that we managed to win the team competition again,” said YRHS Archery coach Mike Jarvis, who had returned to the team at the beginning of the season after taking a couple of years off.

Archers Brayden Jarvis and Cailin Jarvis both found themselves on the podium in singles competition at the provincials, as Brayden took home High School Boys’ gold with a score of 273 while his sister Cailin won a bronze in the High School Girls’ competition shooting a 266 – three back of the gold medal score of 269 shot by Prairie Valley School Division team member Daniella Gericke. “Brayden and Cailin both shot well at provincials, and it was nice to see them rewarded for their hard work,” offered the YRHS coach. “We also had quite a few archers shoot well but just miss the podium, but because of their shooting we still managed to win the team competition.”

Overall, Coach Jarvis feels the YRHS Archery team had a great season, with top shooters in three of their five tournaments this season, four first place team finishes and a fifth place finish at Nationals.

He’s also hopeful for next season, as only two members of the YRHS team - Tamara Bartley and Brett Kuzek - are graduating this year, meaning most of the team will remain together.

The YRHS team will also be bolstered by several 2016/17 grade nine athletes from surrounding elementary schools who have shown promise on the archery range. “Schools like Springside, Saltcoats, Yorkdale, M.C. Knoll, they’re all sending up some fantastic grade eight shooters for me next year so I’m looking forward to these next few years here being very successful with our archery at the YRHS.”
