Young Canora golfers play in tournament and learn about the game

Canora golfers in grades 4-8 had the opportunity to learn about golf and take part in the second annual Big N’ Little golf tournament on September 29 at the Canora Golf and Country Club.

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Canora golfers in grades 4-8 had the opportunity to learn about golf and take part in the second annual Big N’ Little golf tournament on September 29 at the Canora Golf and Country Club.

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý A total of 18 youth took part in the event, which included a morning clinic on the basics of the game, said Alissa Wilson, organizer of the tournament and vice-president of the club.

The clinic was led by three Canora adult volunteers: Terry Dennis, Canora-Pelly MLA, was the putting instructor; Curtis Baillie, teacher at Canora Composite School, instructed the young golfers in the basics of chipping, and Terry Wilson, RCMP officer, taught the participants about fairway play.

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý In the afternoon, the young golfers took part in tournament play. The junior portion included grades 4-5, while grades 6-8 played as seniors.

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Tia Bushell won the junior girls competition with a score of 57, while Abby Wilson took the senior girls title by shooting a round of 62. Colton Bletsky won the junior boys event with a 60, and Toby Olynyk was the senior boys winner with a score of 57.ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý

ÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌýÌý Wilson said the tournament is truly a community effort, including the volunteer instructors and sponsors including Crossroads Credit Union and Saskatchewan Lotteries, giving these young golfers the opportunity to learn about the game.
