Yorkton United U18 girls win Provincial gold

The Yorkton United U18 Girls participated in the 8 vs. 8 Saskatchewan Soccer Association Provincial Championships this past weekend in Yorkton. The first game of the round robin was against Saskatoon Aurora ATR.

The Yorkton United U18 Girls participated in the 8 vs. 8 Saskatchewan Soccer Association Provincial Championships this past weekend in Yorkton.

The first game of the round robin was against Saskatoon Aurora ATR.

The Yorkton club came out tentative and saw Aurora ATR take an early two goal lead and hold on to claim a 4-3 victory.  Kendra Varjassy led the scoring for Yorkton with three goals with Roma Zulyniak adding an assist.

The second game of the tournament was against Saskatoon Eastside Nova.

The Yorkton club came out strong and jumped out to a quick two goal lead and cruised to a 4-2 victory. Varjassy led the scoring netting all four goals with Darrian Desjarlais chipping in two assists and Deanne Kitzul adding one assist.

Ashley Schrader earned the victory in net.

The third and final round-robin game was against Saskatoon Lakewood Legends.

The Legends entered the game with two victories meaning Yorkton needed to win by a margin of two goals or more to qualify for the gold medal game.

The Yorkton club came out strong and determined and went on to a convincing 5-1 victory. Once again Varjassy led the scoring with four goals with Allison Berge adding a goal and an assist along with Marissa Chartier and Roma Zulyniak adding an assist each.

This victory gave Yorkton first place and a berth in the gold medal game against Saskatoon Aurora ATR.

The gold medal game was a tightly played contest that was tied at 0-0 at halftime. Early in the second half Varjassy opened the scoring on a well placed penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead.

Aurora fought back hard and tied the game at 1-1 half through the second half.

Yorkton pushed hard for the go ahead goal and eventually found it when Varjassy scored what would turn out to be the winner with a well placed shot from outside the box and Yorkton held on for the 2-1 gold medal victory. Schrader picked up the win in net.

This was a well earned Provincial Championship with major contributions from every player. The club also received the Fair Play Award which is voted on by the game officials throughout the weekend.

Yorkton striker Kendra Varjassy was chosen by the opposing coaches as the Most Valuable Player for the Championship. Varjassy scored a total of 13 goals over four games.
