Both the Yorkton United U10 Sonics and the Yorkton United U12 soccer teams traveled to Regina to take part in the sixth annual Challenge Cup, which was co-hosted by the Queen City and U.C.T. Soccer Clubs.
The U12 club did their best to channel their inner 2010 New Zealand team, drawing all three round-robin games and missing out on the playoff portion of the tournament.
Nicholas Nesseth and Zach Wasylyshen scored in a Game One 2-2 draw with Regina QC United while Wasylyshen had both goals in a 2-2 tie with Regina REU Impact in the second of three round-robin games.
The third game saw Yorkton United battle to a hard fought 1-1 draw with Saskatoon's SUSC United. Yorkton's lone goal scorer in Game Three was Wasylyshen, who finished the tournament with an impressive four goals in three matches.
The Yorkton United U10 Sonics had a little bit more success than their U12 brethren, going 2-1 in the round-robin before winning the U10 gold medal, blanking Regina REU Rangers 1-0 in the final match and gaining revenge for a tournament opening 2-1 defeat to Rangers.
Scoring the golden goal for Yorkton was Justin Adam, whose shot eluded the Regina keeper at the 28 minute mark of the game. Adam's shot was the only one Yorkton shot to find the back of the net, despite United outshooting Rangers 12-5 in the match.
Other tournament goal scorers were Noah Schneider, who had the lone goal in the first game of the tournament against Regina REU Rangers.
Amish Tripathy, Carter Dumelie, Logan Wesvelt and John Nesseth all found the back of the net in a 4-1 win over Regina QC United U10 in Game Two, while Tyler Powell joined Tripathy and Dumelie on the scoresheet in a 3-0 whitewash victory over Regina ACFC Pumas in Game Three.
