Yorkton United girls win gold in Saskatoon

The Yorkton United U18 Girls Soccer team claimed gold at the Saskatoon Sisco Soccer Tournament November 20-22, besting several other club soccer teams from around Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The Yorkton United U18 Girls Soccer team claimed gold at the Saskatoon Sisco Soccer Tournament November 20-22, besting several other club soccer teams from around Saskatchewan and Alberta.

The Yorkton team opened the tournament against the Medicine Hat Rattlers. This was a back and forth game that saw Medicine Hat open the scoring in the second half, however Yorkton answered back with three straight goals to claim a 3-1 victory.

Kendra Varjassy recorded the hat-trick with Allison Berge and Leia Zulyniak adding an assist each. Ashley Schrader recorded the victory in net.

The second game was against Valley United. This game saw the Yorkton team control play from the beginning and record a 6-0 victory. Varjassy once again led the way offensively scoring four goals and adding an assist, while Berge added a goal and two assists and Marissa Chartier had a goal.

Deanne Kitzul and Darrian Desjarlais both had one assist each and Schrader recorded the shutout.

The third and final game was against Saskatoon Aurora with first place and a bye to the final on the line. Yorkton’s stingy defene and strong offence led to a 4-0 Yorkton victory. Schrader recorded her second straight shutout with Varjassy leading the offence with four goals and Berge adding a pair of assists.

This pitted Yorkton against Medicine Hat in a rematch of their first game of the tournament in the gold medal game.

This time Yorkton came out strong and claimed the gold medal with a 5-2 victory.

Varjassy potted all five goals with Berge adding two assists and Kitzul adding one helper. Schrader picked up her fourth victory in net on the weekend.

This is the first tournament win for the United girls this season after finishing in second place in their last tournament.
