Yorkton football fans got a chance to meet Saskatchewan Roughriders stars Kory Sheets and Weldon Brown at Haas Nissan on Sept. 17.
The Rider meet and greet was one of many at Nissan dealerships throughout Saskatchewan. The football club and the automobile company agreed to have an autograph signing at every Nissan dealership in the Land of the Living Skies this year because of their strong business relationship.
The endless lineup of fans would have shocked Brown before he made the trek up to Canada for his football career, but after suiting up in the green and white for almost three months, he wasn't surprised to see the huge fan support.
"The fan support is great," said Brown, who plays defensive back. "The Riders have the best fans and they are all over. I didn't know it was like this before I came to Canada, but I saw their great fans while playing in Edmonton (for the Eskimos) and now I have seen it a lot playing here."
Sheets, meanwhile, is used to it as well.
"I'm never surprised to see a lot of fans because we have so many - they're great," the star running back said. "They're always in green and it's great."
Sheets garnered the most attention, but not because of his outstanding start to the season, rather because he sustained a knee injury in his previous game against the Toronto Argonauts.
"The knee feels good," said Sheets, who could be back next week against the Montreal Alouettes. "It's not a long-term injury so I should be back soon."
Sheets, however, wasn't near as optimistic while lying on the ground after suffering the injury.
"The only thing that was going through my mind was that the season might be over," said Sheets. "It's never a good feeling when you don't know how bad it is."
Sheets, who has rushed for 1,222 yards on 213 carries thus far this season, credits his offensive line and quarterback Darian Durant for his phenomenal start to the year.
"The o-line has been making the right blocks to give me holes to run," he said. "And Durant has a great arm and that makes it so the defences have to be ready for a throw. Our offense has just worked well together as a whole."
As far as next year goes, Sheets hasn't decided, or revealed anyways, whether he's going to try out in the NFL.
"I don't know because I'm not thinking that far ahead," said Sheets, whose contract runs out with the Riders at the end of this season. "I'm just focusing on this year and I think it could be a very big year for us."
