Sask Volleyball hosted the 16U Men’s Booster Juice Cup in Yorkton. Teams from across the province came to the city to participate in the tournament.

Tier 1 Gold was won by the Regina Volleyball Club Green team. Tier 2 Gold was won by the Prince Albert Smashing Bananas Black squad, while the Swift Current Jr. Sundogs 15U team won Tier 3 Gold.

Yorkton’s own Bongo Volleyball took Tier 2 Bronze. Dion Pfeifer, head coach of the Yorkton squad, notes that this is the first year of the 16U squad, and they’re proud of the result, especially since the team is relatively fresh.

“It’s our first tournament, first action. We’ve only had a handful of practices since Christmas, a lot of the other clubs have had a little bit more experience this year.”

Pfeifer expects that with more practice, the team will be able to compete with the best in the province, especially after they have the chance to adapt to the intensity and the style of play of the more established teams.

“They adapted very well over the weekend, and did well over the weekend.”

The team wants to work on serving and passing, though Pfeifer believes that physically they can compete with any team in the province.

“If we can improve that, we can compete with the top teams as well.”

Volleyball is growing in the province. There are more teams registered in the province and the standard of play is very high, Pfeifer notes. He was impressed by how the Saskatchewan Volleyball Association ran the tournament.
