Rain-shortened loss

Saturday the Saskatchewan Division leading Weyburn Beavers visited Jubilee Field.

The Beavers scored twice in the second and added one in the third. Then the clouds would roll in with lightning and the tarps would come out after five innings ending the contest 3-0.

Garrett Osterode had the start, and the loss for the Cardinals, striking out seven, but also allowing eight hits and the three earned runs.

Late inning crash

Friday in Melville things looked good for the Cardinals after they scored five in the sixth to take a 6-1 lead.

But the Millionaires responded with two in the seventh, and eight in the eighth for an 11-6 win.

Carter Hanford and Zach Mihic each had a home run for the Cardinals.

Codie Scanlon started for Yorkton and went seven innings allowing three runs, two of those earned and striking out seven, but he would not get a decision.

The loss would eventually be tagged on Aaron Dick based on a third of an inning’s work where he gave up four hits, and five earned runs.

Queen City win

The Cardinals were in Regina last Thursday, where they scored three in the second, and added one in the fourth for a 4-0 lead before the Red Sox plated a pair in the fifth.

Yorkton would get one of those back in the sixth to make it 5-2 before Regina rounded out the scoring adding a final run in the eighth.

Riley MacDonald would lead the Cardinal offence with four RBIs.

Rodney McKay started and went seven innings for the win. He scattered six hits, striking out six, while allowing two earned runs.

Aaron Dick had a two inning save.

Wednesday doubleheader

After being rained out Tuesday, the Cardinals hosted the Edmonton Prospects in a doubleheader at Jubilee Field.

Game one would see the Cards score in the first inning only to give the Prospects three in the top of the second.

But Yorkton would chip away, adding one of their own in the second, then another in the fourth to tie the score 3-3.

In the fifth they would get another single run, which proved the winner in the 4-3 contest.

Camran Bonnema started and went the distance in the seven-inning contest for the win. He scattered nine hits, the three runs, all earned, and struck out four.

Offensively Luke Wurzelbacher would go deep with a solo home run for the Cardinals.

In the second half of the doubleheader the Cardinals plated two in the first, three in the second and one in the fourth for an eventual 6-0 win.

Eric Nerl would go the distance in the seven-inning contest as the Yorkton starter, allowing only one-hit and striking out five.

Dondrei Hubbard went deep for Yorkton for three RBIs.

Up next

The Cardinals will spend the week in Alberta.

Yorkton was scheduled to face Edmonton Tuesday, but results were not available at press time. They will face the same Prospects team tonight (Wednesday).

Thursday and Friday the Cardinals will be in Okotoks to face the Dawgs, and then swing to Lethbridge to challenge the WMBL’s best team (a winning percentage of near .750).
