Although it's the middle of winter the Yorkton Yorkers Cricket Club has been hard at work improving their game and trying to grow the sport of cricket within the city.

Throughout the winter the Yorkers have been holding training sessions at the Gallagher Centre's Flexihall each Saturday from 2:00-5:00p.m.

Although it's usually just team members that attend, Faisal Anwar, team captain of the Yorkers, insists that everyone is welcome. "Absolutely anyone can come give cricket a try," said Anwar during a training session on Saturday. "Even newcomers who have never played cricket before are welcome to join us and learn some new skills.

If they can compete good enough then they can play for us in league play as well."

Anwar also mentioned that although they are simply training right now, they do have big plans for 2014, which include, but aren't limited to, starting a junior team. "This year we will be working with schools in the city to introduce this game. We'll see if we can get some really good players so we can improve their skills and create a junior cricket team," mentioned Anwar. "That's one of our goals as well as promoting cricket in Yorkton."

The members of the Yorkton Yorkers think that locals will easily adapt to cricket once they give it a try, seeing as many of the skills in cricket are roughly the same as many skills in baseball; a sport that is played with gusto throughout Yorkton and area in the summer.
