On January 31 students from YMATC travelled to Dalmeny, SK to compete at the inaugural Tomodachi Open Martial Arts tournament.

Two students competed for their first time here and both had a fantastic showing achieving medals in every event they entered.

Matthew Hartwig won a bronze in Point Sparring, silver in Forms and took the gold in Weapon Sparring for white/yellow belts in the 16-17 year old division.

Dante Roodt won gold in both his Point Sparring and Weapon Sparring Divisions for white/yellow belts in the five and six year old division.

Chief Instructor Mr. Forster won silver medals in Forms and Point Sparring and gold medals in Weapon Forms and Sambo.

On February 14 students from YMATC travelled to Prince Albert, SK to compete in the Fire & Ice Challenge.

Once again all competitors from YMATC took home medals and trophies for every event entered! Isaac Forster won a bronze in Point Sparring, silver in Weapon Sparring and gold in Forms.

Kim Lafontaine won three bronze for Weapon Sparring, Point Sparring and Forms and took silver in Weapon Forms.

Christine Prescott won bronze in Weapon Forms and three silver for Weapon Sparring, Point Sparring and Forms.

Mr. Forster took home two silver medals for Forms and Weapon Forms and three gold for Weapon Sparring, Power Board Breaking and Point Sparring. He also won the Grand Champion Title for Point Sparring.

Mr. Forster, Ms. Prescott and Mrs. Lafontaine will all be travelling to Korea this July to compete in the second Mulimpia Open World Martial Arts Championship. Fundraising has already begun and they would like to thank all those who have helped with sponsorship to date.

The 11th Annual Abominable Snow Slam Open Martial Arts Tournament was hosted by YMATC Saturday, March 7 at Dr. Brass Elementary School in Yorkton.

The event brought in athletes from around the province to compete in events such as: Forms, Weapon Forms, Point Sparring, Weapon Sparring, Team Sparring, as well as Power Board Breaking and Power Brick Breaking competitions.

All local athletes that competed took home medals from their home tournament.  Adam Rusnak won two gold and one silver, Aiden Allary won two silver and one bronze.

Andrew Ross brought home one bronze while Christine Prescott won a gold and a bronze.

Youngster Dante Roodt won a gold, a silver and a bronze medal at the competition while Gracynn Gurniak-Hudy also won three medals (two gold, one silver). Jaron Weinmaster collected a silver and a bronze medal while Kim Lafontaine and Matthew Hartwig both gathered up four medals; Lafontaine with a gold and three silver and Hartwig with two gold and two silver.

Maddison Allary and Matthew Ross both won three bronze medals and Ryan Allen won three silver while Nicholas Blount  won three medals (one gold, two silver).

Preston Hartwig rounded out the string of successful locals with a silver medal.

Chief Instructor - Mr. Michael Forster will be examined for the rank of sixth Dan Black Belt – Master Instructor in TaeKwon-Do with the first part being held at YMATC in Yorkton on Tuesday, March 31.

 Grand Master Scott Kopperud – President of Unified TaeKwon-Do International - will be in attendance as Mr. Forster demonstrates the TaeKwon-Do knowledge he has gained over the past 23 years. Parts two and three of his Master’s Exam will take place in Saskatoon on May 2 and June 6 respectively. Among the events at the exam Mr. Forster will be performing Step Sparring, Self Defence, Forms, Board Breaking and a special demonstration with his students.
