The Yorkton Yankees are the 2015 Provincial Senior ‘A’ champions.
The Yankees headed to North Battleford for the championship tournament on the weekend, playing their three round robin games Saturday after being rained out Friday night.
In game one Saturday the Yankees took a 10-2 win over the Arm River Indians.
“We really hit the ball very well that game,” offered team spokesman Mark Jacobs.
Next up in round robin play were the Border City Blue Jays.
It would take extra innings for an 7-6 Yankee win, a win generated by a trick play.
“We suicide squeezed on that one,” said Jacobs.
The bold move was not out of character for the Yankees.
“The last few years we’ve been an aggressive team,” said Jacobs.
So with Zach Rakochy at the plate, and Logan Calanchie on third, the squeeze was on.
“They had the tools to do it,” said Jacob.
The two wins meant a playoff berth for the Yankees, but they still had the host North Battleford Beavers in round robin action. It was near 10 p.m. when the teams met, both 2-0, the winners being the number one seed for the playoffs.
Jacobs said the Yankees didn’t want to tax the pitching staff, but they wanted a win too.
Mike Sarafincian went to the mound and gave the Yankees a 13-2 win.
Sunday in the playoff round the Yankees met the Findlater Braves in their first game, winning 10-1.
“We hit the ball very well,” said Jacobs.
The win over the Braves put the Yankees in the championship final against Meadow Lake.
Calanchie was the man on the mound, a situation Jacobs said was exactly what the Yankees wanted.
“He’s been our ace all year,” he said.
The Yankees fell behind early, but they battled back to win 6-3.
Jacobs said the Yankees had a great mix for the weekend adding depth the roster with Darcy Blommaert, Phil Sobkow and Travis Mentanko among those added. Sobkow and Mentanko batted three-four throughout the tournament.
The win was a big one with the Yankees looking to build on last year.
“We lost last year in the final,” he said.
Jacobs said many of the Yankees have played together for several seasons, so a provincial crown fits rather well.
And while they relish the win, the season is not over for the Yankees. They await the winner of a series between Langenburg and Russell to play for the 鶹ýAV East Senior Baseball League title.
