The Yorkton Yankees are on a roll picking up three straight wins to propel themselves to first place in the seven-team SESBL.
Yorkton throttled their rivals the Willowbrook Royals 11-1 at Willowbrook鈥檚 John Krasowski Memorial Field on Tuesday, June 16, before going to Canora and blanking the sluggish Supers 7-0 on Thursday, June 18 at Al Sapieha Field.
The Yankees then made short work of the SESBL whipping boys, handing the West Parkland Stars a 13-2 thumping on Monday, June 22 at Jubilee Park to improve their record to a league best 8-3 with four games remaining on the schedule.
The Russell Bulls are close behind in second place with a 7-3 record while the Swan River Reds sit in third at 6-3.
The Langenburg Indians holds down fourth place at 5-3 with the defending champion Willowbrook Royals find themselves in fifth place with a .500 record at 5-5.
After a hot start to the season the Canora Supers have struggled and now sit in sixth overall with a 5-6 record while the West Parkland Stars hold down last place with a league worst 2-8 record.
Offensive outburst
Earlier in the season the Yorkton Yankees sometimes struggled to find ways to score runs, however it seems as if their offensive woes are a thing of the past as the SESBL leaders have managed to score 31 runs in their last three games.
The sudden burst of offence has been a welcome sight to assistant manager/player-coach Mark Jacobs, who said he was happy with the way the team has performed offensively recently. 鈥淓veryone is contributing to the offensive attack now,鈥 Jacobs told Yorkton This Week. 鈥淭hey hit the ball hard off the bats one thru nine and the subs even chip in and that is good to see.鈥
That team-wide offence will have to continue for the remainder of the season however, if the Yankees want to remain atop the standings at the end of the regular season, especially as the Pinstripers have two big games ahead of them. 鈥淲e definitely have two bigger ones聽 coming up as we have to play Russell again and we want to repay the favour as they came here and beat us so we want to go there and do the same to them,鈥 said Jacobs, continuing, 鈥淚t鈥檚 going to be a tough game, probably one of the better ones this year and I鈥檓 definitely looking forward to it.
鈥淭hen we play Willowbrook here on Saturday and after we beat them 11-1 I鈥檓 sure they鈥檙e going to be coming out with their best effort to beat us.鈥
Next action
The Yorkton Yankees took on the Parkland Padres last night however results were unavailable at press time. The next action for the Yorkton Yankees will be this Friday when they travel to Russell. They鈥檒l then host the Willowbrook Royals for what is sure to be an entertaining game on Saturday afternoon (2:00p.m.) at Jubilee Park before wrapping up their 2015 SESBL regular season on the road on Monday against the West Parkland Stars.
