The Yorkton Yankees were hoping to ride a wave of momentum into Thursday night鈥檚 away game in Langenburg against the host Indians, looking to improve their 2016 SESBL record to 3-0 following a pair of close wins - 2-1 over Canora and 9-7 over Russell 鈥 to start the season.
Unfortunately that was not to be as the Indians rallied to score four runs in the bottom of the sixth to hand the Yankees their first loss of the 2016 season, 6-2. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e a pretty good team and they put together four runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up on us,鈥 said Yorkton Yankees player/manager Mark Jacobs, adding that once that happened it was nearly impossible for the Yankees to come back, especially this early in the season. 鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty tough to score four runs in an inning, especially in the seventh inning early in the season, so after that it was pretty well over and they shut the door on us.鈥
The host Indians opened the scoring first, jumping on Yorkton starter Logan Calanchie early and pushing a single run across the plate in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead, but a two-run blast by Jayden Shwaga (off of Langenburg starter Dane Kobylko) in the top of the second quickly gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
That lead proved to be short lived however, as the Indians responded with聽 homerun of their own in the bottom half of the second inning when Andrew Minchuk launched the ball over the outfield fence for a solo shot to tie things up at two.
From there both starters 鈥 Yorkton鈥檚 Calanchie and Langenburg鈥檚 Kobylko 鈥 settled down, keeping the opposing offence鈥檚 off-balance with a combination of breaking balls and fast balls to keep the game tied at two, but a four run sixth inning for the hometown Indians proved to be too much for the Yankees to handle, resulting a 6-2 Yorkton loss.
Calanchie took the loss for the Yankees despite a strong performance on the mound. The Yorkton ace gave up six runs (three earned) on four hits and one walk while striking out eight, however three costly errors by the Yankee defence led to Calanchie dropping to 1-1 on the season.
