The Yorkton Yankees had a relatively slow week in the SESBL playing just one game this past week, handing the rival Willowbrook Royals a 2-0 defeat on Saturday afternoon at Yorkton鈥檚 Jubilee Park.
Matt Poier led the Yankees to their sixth consecutive victory with a complete game effort in which he surrendered just four hits and two walks over seven innings of work while striking out four for his second straight complete game shutout. 鈥淗e pitched against Canora there and then here against Willowbrook and kept them off the scoreboard so he鈥檚 done well for us with back-to-back shutouts,鈥 Yankees鈥 assistant manager/player-coach Mark Jacobs said following Saturday鈥檚 victory over Willowbrook. 鈥淗e鈥檚 never going to strike a lot of guys out but he just makes them put the ball in play and makes good pitches.
鈥淲e got them to hit a bunch of pop ups and fly outs and he鈥檚 been very effective for sure.鈥
Offensively the Yankees were sparked by MacKenzie Unyi who was 2-for-2 with a double, a single and three stolen bases.
Unyi also scored both of Yorkton鈥檚 runs in the Yorkton victory; their second such result over Willowbrook in the past two weeks. 鈥淭he first one we came out on top 11-1 and it wasn鈥檛 the type of game that they usually play,鈥 mentioned Jacobs on the Royals. 鈥楤ut tonight was more of a classic Yorkton/Willowbrook game. It was tight to the final out. They even had two guys on there and we turned a double play to get out of it.
鈥淭hat鈥檚 the type of game that we expect when we meet them; a low scoring, strong defensive game.鈥
The Yankees were scheduled to compete in Roblin on Monday night against the West Parkland Stars, however results were unavailable at press time. Yorkton has just one more game remaining on their schedule, a makeup game against the Russell Bulls that as of yet has not been rescheduled.
