Despite missing many of their usual supporters due to Canadian Nationals being just around the corner, the Prairie Wildfire Tae Kwon Do Challenge held at the Flexihall still managed to draw in 185 athletes – 30% more than last year’s event.

“We were missing quite a few black belts because of the Nationals being so close to our competition,” Kees Tae Kwon Do instructor Wayne Mitchell told Yorkton This Week, continuing, “But the coloured belt numbers were way up and in the end it was about 30% larger than last year’s event, so we were quite pleased with the amount of coloured belts that attended.”

Master Mitchell said that the event was quite the success, with 29 local competitors taking part, many of whom managed to find their way on to the podium. “Quite a few of our local athletes did well, and they represented Yorkton very nicely.”

In addition, Mitchell told Yorkton This Week that the Prairie Wildfire tournament was attended by over 15 different Tae Kwon Do schools, some from as far away as Williston, North Dakota. “It’s nice to get competitors from all over,” said Mitchell. “Athletes from Winnipeg, Alberta, Saskatchewan and even North Dakota came to Yorkton for the competition.”
