It was a weekend that both the Parkland Expos’ ‘A’ and ‘A’ teams would like to forget as the two teams combined to go 0-4 on the weekend with three shutout losses in total.
In fact the two midget clubs were outscored 39-1 on the weekend with the ‘A’ squad falling to the 鶹ýAVeast Legacy Twins by scores of 5-0 and 12-0 while the ‘A’ Expos dropped two straight decisions to the Weyburn Beavers 14-1 in Game One and 8-0 in Game Two.
‘A’
The ‘A’ Parkland Expos had their bats silenced in a big way on Sunday in Estevan against the 鶹ýAVeast Legacy Twins, managing to scrape together just three hits in two games.
Game One saw the Expos face one of Saskatchewan’s most dominant midget-aged pitchers in Carson Perkins.
The 6’5”, 215-pound Perkins dominated the Expos’ bats in Game One striking out 14 and surrendering just one hit in the win. “You can’t get too upset about their pitcher throwing a very nice ball game in Game One,” offered Parkland Expos’ assistant coach and manager Stefan Bymak. “We had one hit and he struck out 14 of our guys and he’s a provincial team member and a high end calibre pitcher.
“He pitched really well against us and shut us down. You don’t do much but tip your hat to him and hope you have a better shot at him next time.”
Parkland starting pitcher Tyson Black also put together a solid performance going inning-for-inning with Perkins, fanning four Twins batters and giving up just four hits over six innings of work.
Unfortunately for Black his control – which has been one of his strengths this season – wasn’t as strong as usual resulting in five walks. His defence, too, struggled at times resulting in five runs (three earned) being scored. “We had a few defensive breakdowns behind him today which put five runs on the board for them,” mentioned Bymak, continuing, “He pitched well today and went the distance in his game. He battled Perkins inning for inning there and they only got a few hits off of him all game.”
Game Two was much the same as Game One with the Expos struggling at the plate and on the field. The only difference was that the pitching also struggled as the Twins scored five in the first, one in the second and six in the third to coast to a 12-0 win.
Caleb Bymak took the loss for the Expos as he struggled with his control walking four batters and giving up two hits resulting in five 鶹ýAVeast runs in the first inning of the game.
Cole Rathgeber didn’t fare much better in relief surrendering seven runs on eight hits and two walks while striking out three in 1.2 innings of relief work before first year midget Kaito Farquharson came into the mop up, tossing a scoreless inning and striking out two batters.
Taylor Elmy led what offence there was for Parkland in the second game. Elmy picked up the only two hits for the Expos with a pair of singles.
The next regular season action for the ‘A’ Expos will be Tuesday, July 7, when they host the 鶹ýAVeast Twins at 7:00p.m. in Melville.
Player of the Week
For the second consecutive week a member of the Parkland Expos’ ‘A’ team brought home Boston Pizza Player-of-the-Week honours.
This time it was starting pitcher/shortstop Tyson Black that earned the Player-of-the-Week award. Black picked up the win against the Saskatoon Cubs with a complete game one-hitter in which he fanned 10 batters and was just one pitch away from a perfect game.
He also went 3-for-5 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, two walks, five RBI and one stolen base.
‘A’
Much like the ‘A’ squad, the ‘A’ Expos also struggled this weekend dropping a pair of games to the visiting Weyburn Beavers by scores of 14-1 and 8-0.
Luke Walters took the loss in Game One giving up 12 runs on eight walks and nine hits as the ‘A’ Expo defence committed five errors – most of which occurred in the first inning – in the defeat.
Walters also led the Expos offensively going 2-for-2 with a walk while Zach Goulden-Maddin was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Mitch Karapita picked up the lone RBI for Parkland with a bases loaded hit by pitch.
Game Two saw the ‘A’ Expos put forth a better effort. Unfortunately they could not buy a run as they fell 8-0 to Weyburn.
Grady Hawkins picked up the loss despite a strong effort on the mound. Hawkins gave up five runs on four walks and five hits while striking out six batters while Jordan Evans led the offence with a 1-for-2 effort at the plate in which he stroked a double and stole a base.
The next action for the ‘A’ Expos will be Sunday, July 5, when they host the 鶹ýAVey Eagles for a doubleheader in Melville. First pitch is 1:00p.m. for Game One.
They’ll then be in action Monday, July 6 for a pair of games against the White Butte Broncos in Yorkton. Game One begins at 6:00p.m. with Game Two to start shortly after the conclusion of the first game.
