The Yorkton United U10 Girls soccer team captured their second gold medal of the season in as many tournaments with a thrilling sudden death shoot out win over Prince Albert Celtic. at the Winterfest tournament held in Regina over the weekend.
The Rush opened the tournament with a 4-0 win over Regina FC Belanger. Goal scorers were Sophie Smith with the hat trick and a single by Addisyn Jakubiec. Avery Bond and Koriona Severight combined for the shutout.
Game Two saw the Rush experience their only loss of the season thus far, falling 3-2 to
Prince Albert Celtic. Yorkton was up 2-0 at the half on goals by Willow Krawetz and Jakubiec, but P.A. stormed back with three unanswered goals in the second half for the victory.
Yorkton then had to win their third game against Regina FC Scott to advance to the final. This they did with a convincing 9-0 win on the strength of five goals off the foot of Sophie Smith, two from Addisyn Jakubiec and singles scored by Angela Fetsch and Lacey Westvelt. Koriona Severight recorded her second shut out of the tournament.
In the final vs P.A. Celtic once again, Yorkton won the gold in penalty kicks after the teams played to a 0-0 draw in regulation and overtime. It took eight shooters in the shoot out to determine the winner with the game winning goal finally coming of the foot of Mischa Chernoff. Angela Fetsch played as keeper in the shoot out.
Defenders Lily Johnson, Sara Switzer, Angela Fetsch, and Addisyn Jakubiec provided solid defense all weekend and much improved play from Kirsi Kitch, Willow Krawetz, Lacey Westvelt and Mischa Chernoff helped the Rush control the midfield. Sophie Smith’s eight goal performance helped Yorkton outscore their opposition 15-33.
The Rush will next see action mid February in Winnipeg’s Golden Boy tournament.
