The Yorkton United U18 girls’ team combined with four Yorkton United alumni women to enter the Regina Soccer Association Adult Tournament this past weekend.
The first game was against Regina Strikers and was a closely played contest ending in a 0-0 tie. Ashley Schrader picked up the shutout for United.
The second game of the round-robin saw the Yorkton offence break out for a 4-1 victory over Regina Latina’s United. Roma Zulyuniak and Bailey Popowich led the offensive charge with two goals and an assist each while Schrader and Breanne Gelowitz shared the victory in goal.
Game Three of the round-robin was against Regina Crossfire. This game saw a lot of goals being traded back and forth between the clubs with the Yorkton side eventually prevailing 6-3. Zulyniak led the scoring with two goals and two assists with Allison Berge adding two goals, Kendra Varjassy chipping in with a goal and an assist while Kailee Trost also scored in the game for her first of the tournament.
The fourth and final round-robin game was against Regina Wanderers – a game that proved to be a preview of the final.
Yorkton jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see the Wanderers fight back to end the game in a 2-2 tie. Varjassy and Zulyniak scored a goal each while Bailey Inglis and Berge both picked up an assist in the draw.
The Final game was against the same Regina Wanderers. Once again this was a closely contested match with the Yorkton squad posting a 3-1 victory to claim the tournament title. Schrader had another spectacular game in net picking up the victory with Berge potting two goals and one assist and Varjassy adding a goal and two assists.
Overall the Yorkton ladies posted a record of 3-0-2 to win another gold medal this year.
