The Yorkton United Girls U18/16 team competed in the Regina Challenge Cup this past weekend.
The first game on Friday evening was played against Regina QCT.
Yorkton came out with the 3-1 victory after falling behind early. Melanie Bommer led the way with two goals with Kendra Varjassy recording one goal and one assist, and Roma Zulyniak adding an assist.
Edie Schramm earned the victory in net.
The second game of the tournament was on Saturday morning against Swift Current United.
This game saw the Swift Current squad jump out to a 3-0 lead before Melanie Bommer replied with two goals to close the gap.
Yorkton came very close to tying the game in the final minutes rattling a shot off the goal post, however Swift Current hung on for the 3-2 victory.
The game proved costly as Yorkton lost two players to injuries for the rest of the tournament during this contest.
Sunday morning the squad faced off against Regina QCT with a trip to the Gold medal match on the line.
Despite being low on players the Yorkton squad came out firing on all cylinders and cruised to a 4-0 victory. Taryn Kustra led the way with two goals with Roma Zulyniak adding a goal and an assist with Leonnie Meyer adding a goal.
Bryce Sherring and Caleigh Grunert added an assist while Edie Schramm posted the shutout and victory in goal.
This set up a Swift Current vs. Yorkton gold medal match for the second time this year with Yorkton defeating Swift Current three weeks ago for Gold in Swift Current. This match was tied at zero at half-time before Swift Current was able to break through and go on to a 2-0 victory.
Next action for the club is the Provincial Championships in Lloydminster on June 26-28.
