This past Sunday members of the Yorkton United girls' U18 and U16 teams, as well as Yorkton United girls' alumni, took part in the third annual 'Yorkton United Kicking Cancer' benefit soccer game with all proceeds being donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
The game, originally scheduled for 2:00p.m. at the Parkland Mall Soccer Field, was moved indoors to the Gallagher Centre's Flexihall due to weather.
But while the rain washed away the lines on the field, one thing it could not wash away were the smiles on the faces of the women taking part in such a good cause. "The girls, you could tell they were happy to play this game," offered Yorkton United U18/U16 head coach Alfedo Bermudez. "Current players and alumni, we all know someone with cancer so it was nice to do something to raise money."
And raise money they did. The ladies raised an estimated one thousand dollars for the Canadian Cancer Society via a bottle drive, collecting pledges and donations from people attending the game.
However Bermudez believes that next year, with proper advertising, the girls could raise much more than the estimated one grand they raised this year. "Next year we want to be a little bit more organized," suggested Bermudez, continuing, "We need to advertise more in advance so everyone will know because this year not many people knew about it.
"If we do that, we should be able to raise more money for this good cause."
