The Yorkton United Under 16-18 girls soccer team claimed their fourth straight provincial title at the 2013 Saskatchewan Outdoor Soccer Provincials Championships in Moose Jaw on June 28-30.

In their opening game against the Battlefords, Yorkton dominated play with numerous scoring chances. Goals from Bailey Pelchat, Kendra Varjassy and Rita Fetsch led them to a 3-0 victory.

Yorkton's second match against Weyburn would turn out to be a preview of the championship game. This game was more of a back-and-forth match. Yorkton, however, won 4-0 thanks to four goals from Rita Fetsch and the stellar defense and goaltending of Edie Schramm.

Yorkton's final round robin game was against Humboldt. Once again, Fetsch led her squad to victory with two goals in the 2-0 win.

With the round robin wrapped up, Yorkton sat in top spot and was sent straight through to the championship.

In the final, Yorkton faced Weyburn for the second time in the tourney. This was a tightly played contest with Weyburn playing a defensive style in hopes of shutting down the offensive explosiveness of the Yorkton girls. But with it all said and done, Yorkton's Morgan Shymanski's lone goal was enough to capture gold.

Yorkton's strong showing was especially impressive since they were comprised of half U16 and half U18 girls competing in the Under-18 category.

Edie Schramm was Yorkton's backbone on the defensive side of the ball, recording four shutouts.

In addition, the team received the Fair Play Award. This award is decided upon by the game officials throughout the weekend and is a very prestigious award to win.

"To the club and the players, winning this award ranks just as high as winning the tournament," said Allan Varjassy. "The club would also like to thank their uniform sponsors Elmy's Friendly Acres Seed Farm, SecurTek and YSA."
