Tug-Of-Oar

Experienced and new paddlers will have a chance to play tug-of-war in the water at the Gallagher Centre this weekend as part of a fundraiser.

The Yorkton Canoe Kayak Club (YCKC) is hosting an indoor dragon boat competition at the Gallagher Center water park on Feb. 11 starting at 8:30 a.m.

The competition, nicknamed 鈥淭ug-of-Oar,鈥 separates participants into teams of four. The groups, armed with paddles, sit in a dragon boat, facing their opposing team. They paddle against each other and the team that covers the most distance in 30 seconds will be declared the winner.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e fighting for inches or feet,鈥 said Jessica Riley, head coach with YCKC and an organizer for the event. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a great visual for people to see.鈥

The competition is raising funds for a new roof at the YCKC clubhouse.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been trying to do it for the last few years and funds just always manage to go to other things,鈥 Riley said. 鈥淭his is, hopefully, a fundraiser directed at [the roof] and [it鈥檚] a fun way to be creative.鈥

The entrance fee for the 鈥淭ug-of-Oar鈥 is $40. This fee includes a membership with YCKC for the season.

[This fundraiser鈥檚] kind of a recruitment for the summer [season],鈥 Riley said.

YCKC is accepting applications for the dragon boat competition until Friday, Feb. 9. Anyone interested in registering for the event can email Riley at [email protected].
