Disc golf is coming to Springside.

At least that鈥檚 the plan if there is a little financial support from area players and local community supports.

鈥淚n 2011, the City of Yorkton installed a Disc Golf Course in Patrick Park (northwest of King Street and Laurier Avenue),鈥 said Shauna Stanley Seymour, Community Wellness Program Coordinator, Springside Community Centre. 鈥淚t is enjoyed by people of all ages all the seasons of the year.鈥

A group of Yorkton players have been promoting the sport in the region.

鈥淎 group of people who regularly play disc golf there (Yorkton) are hoping to expand playing opportunities into communities within the Parkland Region: Springside is one of the communities which has been approached and the Springside and District Recreation Board has agreed to try to raise the money needed to install such a course in Springside,鈥 said Seymour.

Plans have already started in terms of a course.

鈥淭his Patrick Park group has been to the Springside Town Park on the northwest corner of Springside and agree there is enough room to install a nine-hole course,鈥 said Seymour.

The course will use tonal targets, and be a nine-target, par 3 for beginning golfers, with several targets rated par 2 for more experienced throwers, creating a decidedly different course style to the one in Yorkton.

The next step is fundraising the project.

Beyond the cost of the course materials, a course map and rules board will need to be installed at the entrance to the course. And, to ensure maximum return on investment it is advised that highway signage be created and installed on both the 16 and 47 highways directing traffic from both directions to the existence of the course, explains Seymour.

Omar鈥檚 Welding has been approached to manufacture a cost efficient 鈥渢onal鈥 type target similar to what is pictured at right.

Tee boxes and tonals will be numbered using an extreme- weather capable vinyl wrap material.

Signage at the entrance to the course will include the course map, rules of the game, and the names of those donating money to the project.

As such, a campaign is being launched with a 鈥榝riend鈥 donation set at an affordable to even casual players and community supports at $25. Other pledge levels include $100, $250, $500 and $1000, the details of which are amiable by contacting 306-792-2212 or by emailing [email protected]

It is hoped the funds flow early so that they can undertake the manufacturing process, design and apply the vinyl wraps, and install the course before school lets out for summer, said Seymour.
