Six locals take part at Junior Provincials

Seventy of the province’s top men’s and women’s junior golfers, 60 male and 10 female, made their way to Yorkton’s Deer Park Municipal Golf Course last week to compete for Saskatchewan’s 89th Junior Men’s and 65th Junior Women’s Provincial Championship from July 20-22.

Of the 70, six were from Yorkton and area as Kade Johnson (Yorkton), Stephen Oleskiw (Yorkton), Reid Arnold (Yorkton), Carter Lake (Yorkton) and Henry Thomas (Kamsack) all challenged for the junior men’s title while Chloe Sies (Melville) was the lone local female looking to become a provincial champion.

Jr. Men’s results

Kade Johnson opened the tournament up with a round of 77 that included three birdies on Day One to sit in a six-way tie for eighth place at five over par, seven shots back of Round One leader Corey Bailey of Shaunavon.

Stephen Oleskiw (Yorkton) and Henry Thomas (Kamsack) were tied with two others for 29th place after shooting 83 in their first round for +11, while Reid Arnold (Yorkton) and Carter Lake (Yorkton) sat in 52nd and 54th respectively with scores of +19 (Arnold) and +20.

The second day saw Johnson shoot his best round of the tournament, finishing just one above par to move to +6 for the tournament while Oleskiw and Lake also put together their best rounds of the competition; Oleskiw shooting a +6 (78) to move to +17 over two rounds while Lake was +15 (87) for a two day total of +35.

Arnold also improved on his first day total, shooting a +13 (85) in the middle day of competition to sit at +32 while Kamsack’s Thomas put together his weakest round, shooting a +15 (87) for a two day total of +26.

The third and final day of competition saw Johnson continue to lead the local pack, shooting a tournament worst +8 (80) to finish just inside the top 10 at 10th place overall.

Oleskiw was Yorkton’s second highest finisher coming in tied at 36th with Lampman’s Mark Freitag at +35 after a +18 (90) Day Three while Arnold continued to improve all tournament long saving his best round for last, shooting a +9 (81) on the final day to finish tied with Kamsack’s Thomas and three others at 39th overall with a +39 total.

Lake rounded out the Yorkton and area contingent with a +21 (93) final round to finish 52nd overall at +56.

Prince Albert’s Corey Selander won the Provincial title beating defending champion Corey Bailey (Shaunavon) on the first playoff hole with a 30 foot birdie putt after the two tied for the tournament lead after the end of the third round at +2.

Jr. Women’s results

Melville’s Chloe Sies was the only local area female to take part in the 65th annual Saskatchewan Junior Girl’s Provincial Championship, shooting rounds of +18 (91), +11 (84) and +23 (96) to finish in fourth place with a three day total of +52.

Prince Albert’s Brooke Hobson won the Women’s title over fellow Prince Albert golfer Kayla Sawchuk after besting Sawchuk on the second playoff hole to be named Provincial champion.
