A pair of Yorkton teams are headed to the regional curling championships. At the end of the ECDAA curling championships, hosted by the Yorkton Curling Club, both Sacred Heart High School and Yorkton Regional High School have teams headed to the event, with the girls being represented by YRHS and the boys by SHHS.

Both teams finished second in their field, with YRHS falling to Esterhazy and SHHS to Sturgis. Esterhazy and Sturgis will also be representing the district at the regional event.

The girls鈥 squad only lost to Esterhazy. Lana Stanek-Sebastian, coach for the YRHS team, admits it wasn鈥檛 the result they were looking for but that the team is excited to get ready for regionals.

鈥淓sterhazy is always a tough team, they always bring a strong group of girls to our district event every year. So it鈥檚 always a good challenge for us and it鈥檚 always a good bar, because I know they鈥檝e got a couple of provincial banners hanging in their rink.鈥

The team wants to work on their basics, focusing on what they did well, as well as learning from their mistakes in order to prepare for the next step in Lumsden.

Sturgis was the thorn in the SHHS鈥 boys鈥 side all weekend, handing them a loss in their first game and their last. The SHHS team did beat them to force a tie-breaker game.聽

Karen Cottenie, coach for the Sacred Heart team, says that the boys had an excellent weekend, in spite of a slow start. She says that the games were tight and the team worked well together as a team.

Downplaying any potential rivalry, Cottenie is looking forward to being teammates with Sturgis in the upcoming regional event.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e going to be the other regional rep, so now we will be side by side there.鈥

The boys鈥 regional event will be held in Maryfield.

Between girls, boys and mixed rinks there were 19 teams on the ice, which Stanek-Sebastian says is one of the biggest district tournaments. In the mixed division, Canora took gold while Norquay took silver, to represent the district at the regional event in Kipling.

鈥淲e鈥檙e seeing curling is on the rise as far as numbers go.鈥

Both coaches would also like to thank the Yorkton Curling Club and Neil Weinmaster for making quality ice for the weekend.

鈥淗e is fantastic and without him this event would not be at the caliber that it is,鈥 Stanek-Sebastian said.聽
