The Sacred Heart Saints Sr. Boys basketball team found themselves with some tough competition this past weekend as they travelled to Caronport for a tournament.
The Saints finished the tournament with a 1-2 record as they dropped their opening game to the Birch Hills Marauders 54-46. Saints talented offensive threat David Ojo led all Sacred players with 16 points in the loss.
Sacred Heart's second game of the tournament was against the host Caronport Cougars in the 'B' side semi-finals. The Cougars managed to hang around with the Saints for much of the game, however they could not shut down Ojo, who once again led the Saints offense, this time with a 21 point performance in the Saints 54-45 victory.
The Saints final game of the tournament was against the Indian Head Broncs; a game which the Saints lost 78-54 despite a 22 point effort by Jaedon Pellatt.
Although Sacred Heart went 1-2 on the weekend their head coach Garrett Karcha felt that the competition the team experienced will be beneficial in the long run. "In terms of learning experience I think that just playing against some higher level teams and facing a little more pressure was definitely a learning experience for us and it's something we'll be able to build off of for the future," said Karcha.
The future that he mentioned is coming up quickly of course. The Saints will be hosting a four team exhibition tournament this upcoming weekend; a tournament which Karcha hopes will give his team even more in-game experience without the stress of trophies and medals. "It's just an exhibition tournament. It's a round robin so there will be no plaques, no first, second or third place really," said the head coach. "It's just to get three extra games in for experience."
Those three games will take place on December 13 and 14 at the Halo Dome at SHHS against their rivals the YRHS Raiders as well as teams from Melville Comprehensive and Kinistino. There will also be a three team junior exhibition tournament with the host Sacred Heart Saints going to war against to Melville teams, one from St. Henry's and the other from Melville Comprehensive.
