Sacred Heart High School held its annual Awards Banquet this past Wednesday (November 27) at St. Mary's Cultural Centre to celebrate yet another successful year of fall sports. The banquet included, but was not limited to, Justine Zarowny, a Provincial bronze medalist in Cross Country, and a senior girls soccer team that dominated all season long on its way to a Provincial championship.
Many individual awards were also handed out to some 35 athletes from 10 different teams: Junior and Senior Football, Junior and Senior boys Volleyball, Junior and Senior girls Volleyball, boys and girls Soccer, as well as Cross Country and Golf.
The awards presentations began with the Junior and Senior Football coaches handing out the hardware for their teams. Matt Haas (Lineman of the Year), Zack Shearer (Most Valuable Special Teams Player), Louis Shin (Most Improved), Bode Fisher (Saint Sebastian Award), Austin Walkington (Most Valuable Defensive Player) and Nathan Cochrane (Most Valuable Offensive Player) were acknowledged for their performances throughout the Junior football season.
Justin Guy bookended the Senior football awards by winning the overall Team MVP Award as well as the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award. Sandwiched in between Guy's awards were Clark Bazin (Lineman of the Year), Brodie Kormos (Rookie of the Year) and Jared Buzinski (Most Valuable Defensive Player), while Mathew Jendrasheske and Shane Varjassy shared the Saint Sebastian Award.
Kade Johnson took home the only Golf Award on the night as he was named the team's Top Male Athlete thanks in large part to finishing second in the boys Senior competition at Provincials.
Boys Soccer was up next with Austin Byczynski (Rookie of the Year), Austin Jasan (Most Improved), Ben Fetsch (Saint Sebastian Award) and Carter Ruff (MVP) picking up some individual awards. Senior and Junior boys and girls Volleyball then followed boys Soccer by issuing their end-of-season awards. Riana Skikewich and Kristen Jonassen shared the MVP honours for Senior girls Volleyball while Darrian Enns (Most Improved), Nicole Redl (Rookie of the Year) and Brooke-Lyn Somogyi (Saint Sebastian Award) were also recognized for their work on, and off, the court. On the Junior side of things it was Brooke Vranai (MVP), Madi Byczynski (Most Improved) and Brooke Maduck (Saint Sebastian Award) who picked up the awards to round out SHHS girls Volleyball.
Jaedon Pellatt (MVP), Sam Lohnes (Most Improved), Kade Johnson (Rookie of the Year) and Cody Doll (Saint Sebastian Award) picked up awards for Senior boys Volleyball while Nathan Cochrane (MVP) Colbie Sherring (Most Improved) and Noah Clarke (Saint Sebastian Award) rounded out the awards for boys Volleyball in the Junior category.
Ben Fetsch picked up his second award on the night when he took home the Most Improved Award for Cross Country, while Rita Fetsch was given the Saint Sebastian Award and the aforementioned Justine Zarowny was awarded the MVP honours.
The final team to hand out its awards was the 2A Provincial Champion Saints girls Soccer team. Grade nine athlete Allison Berge won Rookie of the year, Kaylee Ford took home the Saint Sebastian Award, Justine Zarowny walked away with Most Improved, while Morgan Shymanski and Kristen Jonassen split the Most Valuable Defensive Player Award 50/50. Rita Fetsch clinched her fourth Most Valuable Offensive Player Award in as many years to round out the Awards Banquet for the Sacred Heart Saints.
Although the night was meant to single out certain athletes and issue them awards based on their performance throughout their respective athletic seasons, Trent Senger, head coach of the Saints football team and Principal of Sacred Heart High School, says that not only is he proud of the award winners, but each Sacred Heart athlete that competed this season. "I'm extremely proud. We have in our school somewhere around 145 student athletes in our school sports," said Senger, continuing. "That's almost over 50% of our entire school. Our teams are successful, but more than being successful on the field is that these kids represent some of the most successful student athletes in academics, helping out in their communities, helping out in their churches. It's just a great group of kids and we're very proud of their accomplishments."
