Sacred Heart High School hosted the 4A Boys Regional Volleyball Championships on November 20-21.
The tournament consisted of seven teams. In pool A: Melville, Fort Qu’Appelle and Kamsack. In pool B: Sacred Heart, Moosomin, Esterhazy and Carlyle. Each pool played a round robin format and played a best of three sets. The top two teams from each pool advanced to playoffs. Â
In pool A Melville went undefeated while Fort Qu’Appelle beat Kamsack.
This eliminated Kamsack from playoffs. In pool B Sacred Heart went undefeated beating each team in two straight sets.
Moosomin came up with no victories, Carlyle with one win, and Esterhazy had two wins. Â
This advanced teams to the semi-final playoffs.
Melville defeated Esterhazy 25-15, 25-14 advancing Melville to the gold match and Esterhazy to the bronze.
In the other semi-final Sacred took on Fort Qu’Appelle. Sacred had a slow start and had a hard time controlling Fort Qu’Appelle hitters.\
Sacred was down 19-24 when Kaeden Hanishewsky showcased some great serving for the Saints to bring them back to tie the game 24 all.
The Saints then showed some great blocking by Nick Kerr and Jonah Sutter and hussle in the back row by Cody Doll and Jake Javier to win the set 26-24.
The Saints kept the momentum into the second set to win 25-19 and advance to the gold medal final while Fort Qu’Appelle moved onto the bronze.
In the gold medal match the Saints team rallied in the first set and looked strong as the score was tied at 16 points.
Melville then took control to win the first set 25-18.
In the second set Melville showed some amazing blocking at the net. Sacred kept swinging and digging the ball off the block, but struggled to get through Melville’s front row.
Melville went on to win the second set 25-16 to claim the gold, Sacred won the silver.
In the bronze match it was Fort Qu’Appelle taking the third and final spot in the provincials with a two sets to one victory over Esterhazy.   Melville, Sacred Heart and Fort Qu’Appelle now travel to the provincial competition in La Loche and will compete on November 27-28.
The tournament will have 10 teams consisting of two pools of five.
