The Sacred Heart High School boys’ soccer team were victorious in their home tournament last weekend.

The tournament consisted of six teams and was run in a round robin format.

After the first day of games, the teams were split into two pools – the A-pool (Friday’s winners) and the B-pool.

The Saints won their first match against Regina Winston Knoll 8-3 on Friday. Goals came from Nick Fetsch (4), Dami Ogunbiyi, Matthew Cochrane, Dawson Malinowski and Jairus Pellatt.

This win advanced Sacred Heart to the championship pool, along with Yorkton Regional High School and Prince Albert Carlton.

In the first game of the championship pool, Sacred Heart defeated Prince Albert 7-6 in a close game. Nick Fetsch scored six goals and Dami Ogunbiyi added on one.

Prince Albert and YRHS faced off and Prince Albert took the win, 3-1.

The final game of the tournament saw the two Yorkton schools face off. Sacred Heart took the win 6-4, with goals from Nick Fetsch (5) and Matthew Cochrane.

Sacred Heart took first place in the A-pool, with Prince Albert finishing second and YRHS finishing third.

The B-pool champions were Regina Winston Knoll.

Following the tournament, SHHS coaches Jeanne Fetsch and Scott Hoffort spoke to Yorkton This Week about their team’s performance.

“We had lots of goals coming into the weekend: to generate offense, come out really fast, and also play some tough defence and take some space and time away from other teams,” offered Hoffort. “I think that our guys did a lot of the things that we were hoping when we came into the weekend, so we’re very pleased with what we saw.”

Fetsch added that they’ve been spending a lot of time in practice focusing on generating scoring chances.

“By scoring this weekend – we had 21 goals in three games – I guess something has been getting through to the boys,” she said.

The team will now continue in their regular season schedule, heading to Prince Albert this coming weekend for the next tournament.

Both Fetsch and Hoffort agreed that the end goal for the team is to see a repeat of last year – the 2A championship trophy.

“We have a very, very strong team this year. But lots of things have to fall in to place for things to work out like they did last year,” added Hoffort.

Because of the team’s championship last year, Sacred Heart will be hosting provincials in Yorkton at the end of October.

“We’re hoping that that’s the time we peak,” said Fetsch.
