Saints senior boys finish fourth in Esterhazy

The Saints senior boys' volleyball team travelled to Esterhazy on October 24-25 for a tournament.

The Saints senior boys' volleyball team travelled to Esterhazy on October 24-25 for a tournament.

The tournament consisted of a seven team round-robin format consisting of teams from Esterhazy, Langenburg, Melville, Sacred Heart, Rocanville, Kahkewistahaw and Kincaid.

In the round-robin the Saints played Melville first losing 20-25, 18-25. In the second match the team played Esterhazy. Sacred Heart controlled the match easily winning 25-15, 25-12. In the third match on Friday the team played Langenburg. Sacred fought hard but came up just short losing 20-25, 18-25.

On Saturday the team started by playing Rocanville. Sacred had a slow start to the first set, but managed to get the win 26-24. In the second set the Saints played their hitting game and dominated the second set winning 25-12. The second match was against Kahkewistahaw. Sacred controlled the net in the first set winning 25-22. In the second set Kahhewistahaw took an early lead winning 16-25. In the third and final set the Saints team was down 9-14 and rallied to fight back with some strong hitting by Riley Kerr and Sam Lohnes to come back and win 16-14. In the last round robin match the team took on Kincaid. Sacred struggled to keep up to Kincaid's fast sets to their hitters and lost 17-25, 16-25.

After the round robin matches Kincaid placed first, MCS second, Langenburg third and Sacred in fourth.

Sacred Heart faced off with Kincaid in the first round of playoffs. Kincaid won in two sets winning both by 15-25. This put Sacred Heart in the bronze match against Langenburg. This was the Saints third back-to-back match. The team played hard, but had no gas left in the tank and lost to Langenburg 15-25, 18-25. This placed the Saints in fourth place overall.

Following the tournament the Saints head coach Curtis Moen had nothing but positives to say about the play of his team. "Kade Johnson did a great job setting and hitting for the team," offered Moen. "Rookie Noah Clarke also did a great job filling in as our second setter. Jake Javier lead the team with his excellent passing in the back row.

"The team was missing two players to provincial soccer, but played well to improve their skills throughout the weekend."

Sacred Heart's next game action is on November 7-8 at the YRHS.
