The Sacred Heart Saints senior boys' volleyball team and the YRHS Raiders senior boys' volleyball team traveled to Melville Comprehensive High School on October 17 and 18 for an eight team round-robin volleyball tournament.
The Saints boys played Esterhazy first winning in two straight sets. The second game was against MCS and the Saints struggled losing 13-25 and 17-25. In the third game on Friday the Saints team played the YRHS. Both sets were extremely close as both teams kept trading points, but the YRHS prevailed winning both sets 25-19, 25-23.
On Saturday Sacred's first game was against Kamsack.
The Saints team easily controlled both sets, which allowed some court time for the younger rookies on the team. Sacred won the game 25-15 and 25-12.
With back-to-back games the team took the momentum into the next game against a strong team from Kahkewistahaw. Sacred showed some strong net play as they put up some huge blocks against the hard hitting team. "Riley Kerr played extremely well, making some hard hits from the power position," said coach Curtis Moen. "Sam Lohnes led the team in blocks at the net as he shut down the hard hitting team." Sacred won the game 25-19 and 25-14.
The next match was against Langenburg. The Saints struggled with serving and had a hard time getting momentum to go their way as they lost both sets 19-25.
In the last round robin match Sacred Heart played Preeceville. Sacred won both sets 25-18 and 25-17. "Middle player Nick Kerr dominated the game for the Saints with a total of eight hit points scored at the net," offered Moen, adding that the team fell short of making the playoffs by only one set win resulting in a fifth place finish despite missing some of their key players due to prior sporting commitments.
Next game action for the Sacred Heart Saints senior boys' volleyball team is on October 24-25 as the team travels to Esterhazy for a tournament.
YRHS Raiders
The Raiders also took part in the tournament; their first action in over a month and a half, beating Sacred Heart, Kamsack, Langenburg and Preeceville while splitting a game with Esterhazy and losing to both Kahkewistahaw and Melville in the round-robin.
The Raiders then went to the semi-finals where they lost to Kahkewistahaw, but by virtue of their round-robin record finished third overall.
