Although school is just getting started, some sports teams are already well into their season.

Sacred Heart High School hosted its annual senior boys’ volleyball tournament on September 8-9.  The tournament consisted of eight teams:  Sacred Heart, Langenburg, Yorkton Regional, Melville, Hepburn, Kincaid, Nipawin and Humboldt.  It was a round robin format.

In the round robin the Saints team defeated Langenburg, Kincaid, Nipawin and Humboldt.  They lost to Melville in two straight sets and came up just short against the Yorkton Regional High School team and Hepburn, going to a third deciding set.  After round robin play, Sacred Heart took on Humboldt in the bronze match. Sacred Heart won the bronze 25-23 and 26-24.  In the gold match it was MCS and the Yorkton Regional.

The YRHS won the first set 25-19, then MCS countered to win the second set 25-22.  In the third set the YRHS took the gold winning 15-10.

“This was a great start to our season to win the bronze” said coach Curtis Moen.  “The team’s confidence improved throughout the tournament and I look forward to a great season ahead.”

Moen continued with, “the most improved athlete from last year is Lucas Chaban showing some strong blocking at the net and putting down some nice hits. Jairus Pellatt led the rookies with the first kill shot at the net.  Grade 12, Grady Hawkins showed his leadership as he laid down some huge middle hits at the net which were nicely set up by setter Jett Stechyshyn.”

The team would like to thank all the parents for working the canteen and to our team sponsors this year for all their support: Ram Industries, Leon’s Manufacturing, Smith Steel, Premier Cabinets, Parkland College and Yorkton-Dairy Queen.  Next game action for the Saints is on September 15-16 as the team travels to the University of Regina-high school classic.
