The Sacred Heart Saints boys’ soccer team won silver at the 2A boys’ soccer provincials held in Regina over the weekend.
The Saints made it to the final with tw straight wins, opening the tournament up with a convincing first round win over Martensville 7 – 1. In this game Christian Smith had two goals. Nick Fetsch two goals while Austin Thomas, Matthew Cochrane, and Dami Ogunbiyi added singles.
The win advanced the Saints to the semi-final where they met a strong and talented team from Luther College in Regina.
The game was one that saw several scoring chances on both sides and eventually was decided on a penalty kick by Ben Fetsch after his younger brother Nick was taken down in the penalty area.
In the Final the Saints met the Notre Dame Hounds in a rematch of their Regional championship game that saw Sacred win 6-3.
The Saints opened the scoring in the 25th minute with a neatly crafted goal by Austin Thomas set up by Nick Fetsch which was taken from a corner. The Saints added to their lead ten minutes later as Stephen Oleskiw scored a nice low shot from a pass from Austin Thomas. The first half ended with the Saints up 2 – 0 at the half.
With only 13 minutes remaining in the game Notre Dame was awarded a free kick on a pass back call that actually came off of a Saints defenders knee and not his foot as the pass back rule states it must.
Notre Dame scored on this free kick and at the 83rd minute tied the game off of a corner kick. This sent the game to two, 10-minute overtime periods instead of a golden goal overtime. In the first overtime Sacred pushed ahead when Ben Fetsch made a determined run into the Notre Dame penalty area and was taken down from behind by one of the Notre Dame defenders and was awarded a penalty kick on which he scored to put the Saints up by one.
In the second overtime Notre Dame was once again awarded a free kick and scored on this to send the game into penalty kicks.
In the penalty kicks, Notre Dame won after the Saints scored on their first two shots but failed to score on their next two while the Hounds were stopped on their first shot put capitalized on their next four.
“We’re very proud of how these boys played all season long,” Saints head coach Jeanne Fetsch said. “They only lost two games all season long and one was to a tough 3A school from Prince Albert, so they should be proud. I know silver isn’t what they wanted, and it’s tough because of how the game was called, but it’s still an impressive end to the season making it to the provincial final.”
The Saints would like to bid farewell to five Grade 12 boys - Ben Fetsch, Austin Jasan, Zach Kostersky, Cody Doll and Andrew Witwicki - and thank them for the contributions that they have made in making the Saints team the successful team that it is.
