The Sacred Heart Saints senior boys’ volleyball team travelled to Melville on October 16-17 for and eight team round-robin format tournament. The teams competing consisted of Sacred Heart, Melville, Fort Qu’Appelle, Shaunavon, Yorkton Regional, Kahkewistahaw, Langenburg and Preeceville.
On Friday Sacred defeated Preeceville, Langenburg and Kahkewistahaw.
Then on Saturday Sacred lost a close match to Melville, then went on to defeat Fort Qu’Appelle, Shaunavon and the YRHS.
This put the Saints team 6-1 after round robin play which put them in the gold match against Melville.
In the first set the Saints team struggled to get blocks on Melville’s left power hitters and lost 13-25.
In the second set Sacred regrouped and came out swinging. Nick Kerr and Bryan Buzinski led the team in hitting at the net while Kerr made some huge blocks at the net to shut down MCS’s hitters. The set was tied at 16, then MCS took momentum after some good serving and pulled away with a final score of 18-25. Sacred Heart went home with the silver medal.
“The team played extremely well as they only lost to Melville throughout the tournament,” said coach Curtis Moen. “Kade Johnson did an excellent job setting for the team this weekend.
“Cody Doll racked up the most served points to help out the team, while Nick Kerr was on fire leading the team both in blocks at the net and kill shots on offensive.”
The next game action for the Saints is on October 30-31 as the team travels to Estevan.
