In preparation for the Christmas holidays, the Sacred Heart basketball teams held a tournament over the weekend for the senior and junior teams from around the area.

Invited to participate in the games were teams from the following schools: Melville St. Henry's, Melville Comprehensive School, Estevan and the Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS).

"It was good," offered Sacred Heart's Garrett Karcha. "It was just something to get some games in before the Christmas break."

The schedule was broken down for both senior and junior teams, and was played over two days. Karcha said it's hard to tell what the rest of the season will be like. It is early on, and most teams have only played in one or two tournaments.

"We're good," he said, "But it's tough to tell because its still early."

In this tournament, he said he used the game time to allow everyone on the team to get some time on the floor.

"Overall we played well enough to get the bench playingour team defence is definitely good." He said the senior team had an alright showing but did well in "getting high percentage shots".

The Sacred Heart senior opened up by squaring off against the Yorkton Regional High School (YRHS) seniors, a game that saw them come up short by 10 points, a 63-53 decision. It was the opening game of the round robin tournament. Sacred Heart opened up Saturday's play against the Melville Comprehensive School and doubled them by a 84-41 count.

Their last action of the tournament came later that night against Estevan. That game resulted in a 87-56 win. Sacred Heart finished the tournament going 2-1.

Sacred Heart's junior teams started the tournament off with a 47-24 win over St. Henry's.

In their second game on Saturday afternoon, they lost by seven to Estevan, 47-40.

The YRHS senior and junior teams fared well on the weekend.

The seniors won their first game, 63-53 over host Sacred Heart.

They beat Estevan in their second game, 86-64, and their final game was a 96-44 win over the Melville Comprehensive School.

The YRHS juniors lost their opening game, 49-45 to the Estevan Elecs. They beat St. Henry's 96-43 in game two on Saturday morning.

Karcha said he thanks all the helpers who gave up their time over the weekend to help run the canteen.
