Royals, Magic claim top spots in volleyball tourney

The Yorkdale Central School hosted a 17-team tournament last weekend. Teams from all over gathered in Yorkton to play in a boys division and a girls division.听

The Yorkdale Central School boys and the Mackenzie Middle School Magic from Dauphin were the two winning teams in the tournament.

Boys side

The Yorkdale Royals went undefeated in pool play, as did the Columbia Cougars鈥. In the final it was Yorkdale over Columbia 2 sets to 1, including 15-13 in the final set.

Girls side

The Yorkdale Royals went undefeated in pool play as did Mackenzie Middle School Magic from Dauphin, MB. Both teams came to blow in the semi-finals with Dauphin winning.听

Organizer Shaune Beatty said it was a great weekend for volleyball, especially with Springside and Saltcoats returning after a few years hiatus. In addition, Langenburg and Esterhazy made appearances for the first time on the boys鈥 side. He said it鈥檇 be great to see this representation come on to the girls side next year. Having St. Michael鈥檚 from the Catholic schools was also a welcomed sight.

The object of the tournament is to gain more game experience in the game of volleyball. The Yorkton city season is a quick one. The idea that a volleyball-filled day of four or five games can do a lot to improve the overall skill level. For much of the past, they have had Manitoba teams come into Yorkton. These teams generally are more 鈥渧olleyball mature鈥 having played more games. Many of these players play an almost ten-month season as they play club volleyball afterwards.听

Yorkdale Central has a team going to Dauphin on October 21. It is expected that the calibre of play will be quite good. But you need to play better teams to play better volleyball.
