The Yorkdale Central Royals girls' volleyball team went through some tough moments but when all the dust finally settled on the volleyball courts, they came away with a nice big trophy, claimed as top team on the lady side.

"They're most deserving," chuckled coach Shaune Beatty following a brief photograph session in the Central school gym with his team.

Yorkdale played six other teams and one of them in particular was no walk in the park, says Beatty.

"We had some adversity in the quarter finals vs St. Alphonsus.

St. Alphonsus did what no other team managed to do to the Royals and that was force a third and deciding set, recalls Beatty.

After playing through a successful round robin, the Lady Royals took a 19-25 setback in the opener, Beatty said.

They rebounded in the very important second set, winning 25-14. That and that set up a third set.

The winner would move on to play Columbia.

Yorkdale won the third set, 15-7.

St. Paul's School played MC Knoll in the other semi final.

MC Knoll won, 25-14 and 25-11 to set up a final match with Beatty's Yorkdale squad.

The opening set went down to the wire and the Royals pulled off a 26-24 win and the second set was just as close, 25-23 Royals.

Yorkdale completed the round robin, with a record of 5-1. They played three teams, winning each set except one, against St. Mary's in the first match of the tournament.

Yorkdale came back and won two straight against Saltcoats and two straight against St. Michael's.
