Five members of the Yorkton Regional High School Raiders senior football team – defensive end Kolby Lang, running back Zack Kais, defensive back Darius Haberstock, defensive end Jon Muir and coach Jason Boyda – recently took part in the 2015 12-man Saskatchewan Senior Bowl as members of Team 鶹ýAV.
While there the quartet of Raiders’ players helped lead Team 鶹ýAV to a come-from-behind 37-13 victory over Team North with Kolby Lang’s three quarterback sacks making a very big difference in the game.
“We’re really proud of those guys for what they were able to do there and for what they have done all throughout their high school careers,” coach Boyda told Yorkton This Week. “They worked their butts off to get there and they deserved to come away with a victory to end their high school careers.”
However it didn’t seem as if they’d walk away victorious early in the game as Team North jumped out to 13-1 lead in the first half. “We were actually down in the first half two scores,” offered running back Zack Kais, who was asked to block far more than run in the game. “We just started getting our stuff together offensively and we eventually proved that we’re the better half of the province with the big win.”
Defensive end Jon Muir also acknowledged the fact that 鶹ýAV was in trouble early on, however he believes that it was the defence – not the offence - that really grabbed the momentum for Team 鶹ýAV. “We got a couple of nice plays and capitalized,” said Muir. “One of them was a strip sack where the ball rolled into the end-zone and one of our defensive guys jumped on it.
“That turned things around for sure and after that they couldn’t do much against us.”
In the end though, it didn’t really matter what the turning point was. The main thing was 鶹ýAV won and, more importantly, four members of the Raiders were able to play one last game together before they all go their separate ways in the football world, with Kais heading to Winnipeg, Lang to Minot State and Muir to the Saskatoon Hilltops. “Those guys have been my best friends and teammates since grade nine, so it was good going up with them and winning with them again,” offered Muir, adding, “It’s great to end it that way and to finish it with your good buddies from Yorkton.”
