The 2015 cheerleading season has so far been very kind to the YRHS Raider cheerleading squad as they鈥檝e recently returned home with their second straight gold medal after taking first place honours in the Senior Level Two Scholastic competition at the University of Regina Charity Cheer (URCC) competition.

The Raider cheerleaders scored 80.3 out of 85 for a 94.47% perfection percentage, however a 1.25% deduction brought their total percentage score down to 93.22%

However that was still over 4% better than second place Estevan as the Raider cheerleading squad once again claimed a gold medal.

The Senior Gridder cheerleading squad also took part in the competition.

The Gridders ran a clean routine and finished with a 94.10% perfection percentage, good enough for third place and the bronze medal in the Senior Level Two All Star Cheer category.

The URCC saw the girls compete in a different format than they had in Warman a week earlier as they were only allowed one performance in front of one judge as opposed to two in front of two judges. 鈥淭his was a one day competition so we only got one run with our routine so it certainly makes the stakes a lot higher,鈥 suggested cheerleading coach Jennifer Ingham. 鈥淭he other difference was that they only had one judge per category while Warman had two judges per category.

鈥淚f the judge misses something then it kind of hurts your score and that鈥檚 kind of the way it is.鈥

Ingham also mentioned that, while it鈥檚 nice for the girls to win these competitions, the more important thing is that they get the experience of running their routines in front of audiences in preparation for Provincials this coming weekend and the Hawaii competition in April. 鈥淭he competitions that we鈥檙e going to locally are practice runs for Provincials and our big goal of Hawaii and the idea is for us to go to these smaller competitions and perform our routines well but also get practice runs in,鈥 offered Ingham, continuing, 鈥淚t鈥檚 always different when you perform your routine in front of a crowd as opposed to running it at practice or in front of the parents.鈥

The three cheerleading teams, YRHS Raiders, Senior Gridders and Youth Gridders, will all be competing at Provincials in Moose Jaw this Saturday, March 21.
