For the 11th consecutive year members of the Parkland Racing Association (PRA) were out in full-force - this time this past Saturday and Sunday afternoons - preparing the Yellowhead International Speedway for the upcoming stock car racing season.
鈥淲e鈥檝e got a good group of volunteers here that come out whenever they鈥檙e needed and right now they鈥檙e here making sure everything is ready to go for our first race,鈥 PRA president Cortney Matkowski told Yorkton This Week. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been at the Yellowhead International Speedway for over ten years now and every year the volunteers and members of the club do a great job preparing everything for the new racing year.鈥
Matkowski also mentioned that the volunteers and members are constantly working hard on the race track to make sure that the highest quality of racing can be performed while ensuring the safety of competitors and fans alike. 鈥淭he track is an ever-evolving thing out here and we鈥檙e constantly working on it and trying to improve it to make it faster and safer at the same time,鈥 said Matkowski, jokingly reminding the public that the race track is out by Louis Dreyfus Commodities and not at the airport. 鈥淲e鈥檝e been here for 11 years and people still think we鈥檙e at the airport when we鈥檙e out here and our members are working hard to prepare the track for the fans.鈥
As a reward for their hard work ensuring the track will be in top condition for the beginning of the new season the members were also allowed to make sure their vehicles were ready to go, test driving and fine tuning their cars in order to be fully prepared for the first race of the season. 鈥淲e call it our test and tune,鈥 offered PRA president Cortney Matkowski. 鈥淚n addition to making sure the track is ready, our club members are also able to come out here in a safe environment to test out their cars and shake the bugs out before we start the season to make sure everything is running alright and there are not safety issues.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been kind of a free-for-all in terms of driving out on the track but we鈥檝e had at least two-thirds of out here testing out their cars and helping get everything ready for the 2015 season and right now we鈥檙e just having a bit of fun as well, before the real racing gets underway.鈥
The first race day of the 2015 stock car season will be Sunday, June 14 with the National Anthem at 2:00pm.
Admission is $10.00 for 13 and over, $5.00 for ages six to 12 while kids five and under get in for free when accompanied by an adult.
