The Saskatchewan Winter Games in North Battleford are fast approaching, and Parkland Valley Sport and Recreation District is preparing the local team for the games. The team had a chance to get ready by attending a sport camp at the Gallagher Centre.

Erin Sobkow with the Parkland Valley Sport, Culture and Recreation District explains that the Parkland Valley team had a chance to learn from three presenters from Sport Medicine and Science Council, to learn about strength and conditioning, mental training, nutrition and concussion awareness.

鈥淲e did this two years ago when we had the Estevan Summer Games. It was very well attended, the people who are presenting are professionals... They have a lot of information, and because the Saskatchewan Winter Games is a stepping stone for a lot of athlete development, this is a great thing to do for the kids.鈥

The team itself has also been revealed, with 163 athletes, coaches and mission staff.

鈥淪ome sports we are very strong in and are anticipating some medals, and some sports we are just developing in. It鈥檚 a great opportunity for kids regardless to experience the games, it鈥檚 a life changing experience,鈥 Sobkow said.

Figure skating, wrestling and biathlon are three sports where the region has a good chance at getting a medal, said Sobkow.

Having a big sports event for the kids is important to motivate the kids to improve in their sports. Sobkow notes that whether it鈥檚 the start of a career or not, it鈥檚 an experience that will stick with kids for the rest of their lives.
