Mother Nature tried her best to ruin the motocross races at Yorkton鈥檚 Millstone Raceway this past Sunday, May 17, however the hard work and determination of volunteers and riders alike kept her at bay long enough for the event to go off without a hitch.
鈥淒espite the weather and how cold it was, the event was really a success,鈥 said Rick Bradshaw, one of the organizers of the event. 鈥淲e had some ice on the track and it was pretty cold, but eventually everything came together and we had a good day of racing without any real injuries.
鈥淭he ambulance didn鈥檛 even leave the track and we didn鈥檛 have to shut anything down due to an injury so you have to give credit to the riders for their abilities and what they did all day.鈥
Bradshaw also offered his praises to the volunteers, who kept the races going despite all that Mother Nature threw at them. 鈥淚t was pretty cold on Sunday and the volunteers didn鈥檛 complain even though they were out there for nine hours,鈥 said Bradshaw. 鈥淭hey really kept the day going and without them we would have had a hard time getting anything going.鈥
In total some 217 racers from all across the prairie provinces braved the cold for the chance to ride on one of Saskatchewan鈥檚 top motocross courses, including several people with Yorkton connections. 鈥淜ennedy Lutz was back here competing and she won every race she entered,鈥 Bradshaw told Yorkton This Week. 鈥淭he women鈥檚 division isn鈥檛 a challenge for her anymore, but she raced it and lapped everyone. She also raced against the men and won those races.
鈥淜ane Dawson, who is from Yorkton but now lives in Saskatoon came out to race here again as well and won the Pro Am while his dad Rick Dawson finished second overall in the over 50 standings and won one of the races.鈥
The event, which is in its 19th year, was also very well attended according to Bradshaw, which is something he wasn鈥檛 sure would happen upon waking up on Sunday morning. 鈥淚 really wasn鈥檛 sure how many people would come out to watch the races,鈥 said Bradshaw. 鈥淏ut there were quite a few people out and all in all it was a pretty successful event.鈥
