It was a great start to the 2014 season for the Yorkon Midget 'AA' Cardinals baseball team.
Despite being undermanned, missing the likes of stars Caleb Bymak and Tyson Black, both who were taking part in a prospects tournament in Okotoks for Team Saskatchewan, as well as Matt Wilgosh and and Shawn Pasiechnik, the Cardinals opened the season with a commanding 21-5 victory over the Â鶹´«Ã½AVey Eagles on Saturday in Â鶹´«Ã½AVey.
Jordan Bieber picked up the first win for a Yorkton midget baseball team in over three years (the past two years Yorkton was unable to field a team) with a sparkling performance over 6.2 innings.
The Cards had a quick turnaround on Saturday, leaving for Lumsden mere moments after winning their first game of the season.
And while the visit to Â鶹´«Ã½AVey resulted in a victory, the visit to Lumsden was not as pleasant.
The midget Cardinals led the hometown Lumsden Cubs heading into the fourth inning when the Cardinals had to go to their bullpen due to their starter developing a sore shoulder.
While the bullpen might be strong later in the season, on Saturday it was not. With Bieber already exhausted from his earlier start and the likes of Bymak and Black not available, the Cardinals had to turn to some younger arms; something that the Cubs exploited, scoring seemingly at will to defeat the Yorkton Midget 'AA' Cardinals 20-10.
However Cardinals coach Stefan Bymak feels that, had the four players who were missing been available that his team would most likely have been more than a match for a strong Cubs club. "If those four guys were there we would have probably won that second game quite easily," mentioned Bymak, before acknowledging that he and coach Tony Black were "happy with the effort" especially since "we were short so many guys".
Next action
The Yorkton Midget 'AA' Cardinals traveled to Melville last night to do battle with their Highway 10 rivals the Melville Millionaires, however results were unavailable at press time.
The next action for the midget Cardinals will be this weekend in Saskatoon when the team will take part in the Selects Tournament.
The next league game for the Cardinals will be Wednesday, May 21 when they host the Mils at Jubilee Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00p.m.
