After a two-week break in midget AAA game action, the Yorkton RawTec Maulers hit the ice again last weekend in a two-game series against the Beardy’s Blackhawks.

The two teams would end up splitting the series, each taking one victory.

The action began on Saturday, when the Maulers and the Blackhawks faced off at the Chief Denton George Memorial Multiplex in Ochapowace First Nations.

The two weeks of rest seemed to do wonders for the Maulers, who came out on fire and ready to play. They ended up taking the game 9-3.

In the first period, both teams saw a lot of scoring action. The Blackhawks would start things off with a goal just 30 seconds into play. But Yorkton would respond shortly after with a goal from Jordan Repsch.

Quickly after that, the Maulers added a second goal, this time from captain Aiden Bulych.

Zach McIntyre would make it three goals for Yorkton.

But the Blackhawks would score two more goals before the period ended to make it a 3-3 tie going into the second.

Thankfully for the Maulers, the Blackhawks’ scoring ended in the first period.

The second saw three goals from Yorkton, coming from Keanan Sperling, Jackson Berezowski and Ryder Korczak.

The third period saw another three goals. Those came from Mackenzie Walkington, Austin Dycer and Josh Bear.

While the 9-3 win was an impressive finish from the Maulers, the following day’s game would prove to be a bigger challenge. This, in part, due to the fact that they were missing three strong players. Austin Dycer, Ryder Korczak and Jackson Berezowski  missed the game due to their attendance at the WHL Cup in Calgary, representing Team Sask.

The three players combined for seven points in Saturday’s match up, so their presence would be missed on Sunday.

The Blackhawks came to the Farrell Agencies Arena for a matinee game on Sunday. The game was a close match, but ultimately the Blackhawks would come out on top with a 3-2 finish.

The Blackhawks scored one goal in each period. At the halfway point of the third, they held a 3-0 lead.

But the Maulers were able to capitalize off two power plays to get themselves on the score board.

Ryder Pierson and Reid Arnold each got one for Yorkton before the buzzer sounded, and the game ended 3-2.

The Maulers are currently in sixth place in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League with a 3-4-0-1 record for seven points.

The Tisdale Trojans lead the league with 15 points from a 7-1 record. The Maulers have been the only team to beat them so far in the season.

Maulers current point leaders are Zach McIntyre (8), Ryder Korczak (8) and Jackson Berezowski (8). All three are in the league’s top 15 in points.

The Maulers play at home on Wednesday, Oct. 18 as they host the Moose Jaw Generals at 8 p.m. at the Farrell Agencies Arena.
