Several Yorkton and area curling teams were in action this past weekend in different events such as the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) Regional competition and Saskatchewan Senior Provincials.

In SHSAA action, three teams from Yorkton Regional and one from Sacred Heart competed with all four failing to qualify for their respective provincial competitions.

The Sacred Heart boys (Reese Kinaschuk, Cordell Struble, Auston Roberts, Eliah Stephaniuk and Kelton Chyz) opened the Regional Competition in Balgonie with a 6-5 win over Carlyle before falling to Balgonie 6-4 in their second game.

The Saints then dropped an 8-6 decision to Lumsden to be eliminated from the Provincial qualifier.

The YRHS boys didn’t fare any better. The team of Jon Nagy, Derek Campbell, Matthew Linsley, Dylan Novak and Braden Kitchen fell to Weyburn 10-2 in their first game and then lost 9-1 to Lumsden to finish 0-2.

Both YRHS girls teams were in Lumsden for their Regional Competition. YRHS #1 - made up of Kellie Onda-Inglis, Sean Thompson, Mikaila Ortynsky, Jillian Just and Emma Just – opened up with a narrow 5-4 win over Carnduff thanks to a draw to the button for the win by Onda-Inglis.

The girls then fell 8-5 to Lumsden and 12-5 to Winston Knoll to finish 1-2 overall and miss Provincial qualification.

YRHS #2 (Tessa Datema, Meagan Dietrich, Mackenzie Bjornerud, Kayley Harvey) also struggled on the weekend, going 0-2 with identical 11-2 losses to Maryfield and Winston Knoll.

On the SHSAA Mixed Curling side of things it was Kamsack (Jayden Chutskoff, Kaylie Bowes, Kyle Morgan, Cassidy Aker, Henry Thomas and Koryssa Woloshyn) going 0-2 with losses to Estevan (8-3) and Balgonie (10-7) while Churchbridge (Brayden Fraser, Jade Goebel, Marcus Gibler, Lexi Morash and Amber Debnam) qualified for mixed provincials in Meadow Lake.

Churchbridge beat Weyburn 7-4 in the first round and Balfour 8-7 in the second round before falling to Estevan 11-7 in the ‘A’ side qualifier. They then beat Weyburn for the second time  - this time 8-5 in the ‘B’ side qualifier – to move on to Provincials.

In the Senior Provincials it was Team Marteniuk (Terry Marteniuk, Raymond Nabe, Brent Kolodziejski and Lorne Fruin) finishing eighth overall with a record of 2-5 while Team Inglis (Cathy Inglis, Pat Kuspira, Donna Liebrecht and Bev Fuches) finished with an overall record of 5-4, losing to eventual Provincial champion Team Anderson 6-5 in the semi-finals to finish third overall.
