Briana Wosminity is headed to Florida in April to compete in a world championship event for cheerleading.

Wosminity said she became involved in cheerleading while attending school in Yorkton.

鈥淚n Grade 10, 11, 12, I was on the Yorkton Regional High School cheerleading team,鈥 she explained.

Graduating last June, Wosminity moved to Regina to attend university where her cheerleading interest continued.

鈥淚 tried out for the University of Regina cheerleading team,鈥 she said, adding that she was selected. 鈥淚t was a dream come true to be one of the team.鈥

Unfortunately, days after being selected, the team was cancelled for the year because of a lack of funding.

But Wosminity鈥檚 high school team coach Jennifer Ingham suggested she try out for one of the club teams in Regina, going so far as to make a call which opened the door for the young cheerleader.

Since September, Wosminity has been hard at work climbing through the ranks of cheerleading to achieve her Level 5.

鈥淟ots of girls take years,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 so happy they all had a lot of faith in me 鈥 they were so supportive.鈥

On Mar. 10 and 11, the GA All Stars Lady Luminous, the team Wosminity is on, travelled to Edmonton to compete for a spot to head to Florida.

The 18-member, all-female team was one of three to earn a trip to Orlando Apr. 25 and 26.

鈥淚t was probably the best experience of my life,鈥 said Wosminity.

On the team, Wosminity is known as a top, or flyer, being a smaller girl, so she is the one doing the flips in the air.

Wosminity said the team will be busy refining the routine that earned them the spot at the worlds in the coming days.

鈥淲e鈥檙e adding more into it to make it more intricate, bigger and better, to make it the best it can be,鈥 she said, adding that it will be needed at an event attracting 11,000 athletes from around the world.

Her mother, Candace Wosminity, said they will be undertaking some fundraising projects and looking for sponsors to help defray the costs of travelling to Florida.
